[101] Elk - Where the name Lyck came from?.
Where the name Lyck came from?
The place existed long before it was called a fishing village and in speech of old Prussians was called "Elk". That meand "Elk" and Elk River meant elk's river. Elk lived here in herds in inaccessible wildernesses and forests. From "Elk" it became "Lk", and later "Lyck". The city had elk in its crest as early as 1513 (on court's stamps).
